James Duncan Futures Prize PDF Print E-mail

The James Duncan Futures prize has been established in recognition of the contribution Professor James Duncan made to science and futures thinking. Professor Duncan encouraged young people to be actively involved din science, and to consider potential long-term impacts, both positive and negative, of their research. He was one of the founders of the New Zealand Science Fair movement and the New Zealand futures Trust.

The New Zealand Futures Trust is an independent organization that focuses on futures thinking. It offers support to New Zealanders who wish to discuss possible futures and their involvement in shaping the future.
The family and friends of Professor Duncan, and the New Zealand Futures Trust support the prize.
This annual prize is open to participants, students from year 7 to year 13, in the Wellington Regional Science and Technology Fair (see http://www.sciencefair.org.nz).

Conditions of entry.
Entrants need to show they have considered possible future impacts, both positive and negative of their project over the next 5-25 years. The entry takes the form of notes, or an essay, of about 100 words in their project manual.
Prize - Cash $250, plus a year's subscription to Future Times (NZFT quarterly journal). The project is reported in the Future Times.

Registration.
Students who wish to be considered for this award will need to register with the Futures Trust representative at the fair venue and hand in their notes or essay for judging on the student set-up day.
